 guinea pig hutch
« Thread Started on Apr 2, 2004, 3:28pm »

I would like to buy a new outdoor hutch for my guinea pigs. I have been considering buying a hutch with a ramp to a run that is attached to the bottom of the hutch. I would like to know if a guinea pig would walk up and down a ramp, also would I be able to place the run onto a patio instead of the grass.

Yes guines pigs can walk up and down ramps providing they are not too steep and make sure the guinea can't fall off and hurt themselves. ou might find that some piggies don't like to go up and down ramps though, or you might have to show them how to go up and down it.

Patio should be fine so long as the ground is even with no sharp bits of grave/stones that they can hurt their feet on. It should help to keep their nails trim. I am not a fan of outdoor hutches though as the weather is too temperamental and there are predators around (neighbours cats etc). If you keep them inside at night and use the run during the day in good weather under supervision then it should be ok.

We have purchased septic tank tubes (4'' diameter) and plastic gutters for ramps for our ladies. The aerated tubes worked very well until Luna (see pigture, guinea mansion) became too fat for them. The gutters were a flop. The guineas would walk halfway down and then leap off of them. One can find larger diameter tubes (Home Depot, Lowe's) and the fittings for the guineas to turn corners. It costs a lot less than Habitrail, for certain! Make certain that your slope is shallow so they can ascend and descend easily.
